My Backstory
I wasn’t supposed to be successful. I dropped out of high school when I was 16 years old. I took my GED from juvenile detention.I bounced around odd jobs for years. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life.I eventually went to college, but got a degree in something that I didn’t want to do for the rest of my life (music education.)Fortunately, while in college, I got a job in IT. Even though I had no experience, I was a quick learner.Turns out, I found my passion. I love technology, building and fixing things, and helping people. From there, I never looked back. After college, I lucked out early-on and got a Director-level job at a mid-sized (8-figure) company whose IT department was in shambles.I spent years rebuilding the department, and in the process, learned that I really enjoyed turnaround efforts. I also got bitten by the software development bug!So, I became a software development manager for a large (9-figure) technology company. Their development processes were also a mess, so another rebuild was in order.During this time, I became an in-demand consultant. I also wrote content for official Microsoft certification exams and spoke at a few Microsoft conferences.I knew I wanted more.I then became the Chief Technology and Administrative Officer for a large non-profit healthcare agency. Guess what? Their IT was in shambles too. Starting to see a pattern?I realized I needed more education on the business side of things, so I got an MBA from the University of California, with a focus on strategy and digital transformation.Today, I’m on my own, helping companies and doing what I love. The moral of the story is: Don’t do what you love, but love what you do! Be passionate and always learn.
